Publishing to Bluesky and Mastodon: a practical guide for brands

For years, "every network" quietly meant "the big five." That's changing. Bluesky and Mastodon have grown into real audiences, and a lot of scheduling tools still can't publish to them natively. If your brand's people are there, here's what you need to know.

What makes them different

Both are part of the "open social web," but they're built differently:

• Bluesky runs on the AT Protocol. In practice it feels a lot like early X — a single timeline, reposts and quote-posts, a fast-moving conversation. It has an official API, so native scheduling is straightforward.
• Mastodon is federated: instead of one company, it's thousands of independent servers ("instances") that talk to each other. Your account lives on one instance but can follow and be followed across all of them. Posts are "toots," and there's a strong culture around content warnings and alt text.

Etiquette matters more here

These communities reward native behaviour and punish drive-by marketing. A few norms worth respecting:

• Always add alt text to images — on Mastodon especially, it's an expectation, not a nicety.
• Use content warnings where the community expects them.
• Don't just cross-post your X feed verbatim. Tailor the tone; these audiences can tell.
• Engage, don't broadcast. Reply and boost/repost others, not just your own links.

How to publish without a dozen logins

You can post to each by hand, but that doesn't scale across a content calendar.
